HACEP Kenya visited Macalder Sub-County Hospital to deliver test kits and train stakeholders
HACEP Kenya carried out a strategic outreach visit to Macalder Sub-County Hospital to support the continued roll-out of newborn screening services in Migori County. During the visit, the team delivered essential SCD test kits and reviewed current screening readiness with clinicians, nurses, laboratory staff, and county-level health officers.
Beyond the supplies handover, the activity focused on practical stakeholder training to ensure every step of the screening pathway is implemented consistently. Sessions covered sample collection, safe handling and storage, timely documentation, and clear referral workflows for infants who require confirmatory testing and follow-up care.
"When test kits, trained teams, and referral systems are aligned, families receive faster support and newborns at risk can start care earlier."
Stakeholders also discussed community sensitization and caregiver education to increase early attendance for newborn screening. The team emphasized clear communication on why early diagnosis matters, where families can access support, and how health workers can track each case from screening to treatment enrollment.
Key areas covered during the training
- Correct use and accountability of SCD test kits at facility level
- Standardized newborn screening procedures and quality checks
- Accurate data capture and reporting through routine hospital records
- Referral linkages between Macalder Sub-County Hospital and higher-level care centers
- Stakeholder coordination for continuity of care and patient follow-up
This visit strengthens HACEP Kenya's partnership with frontline facilities and local health leadership in the Lake Region. Follow-up mentorship will continue in the coming weeks to monitor uptake, resolve implementation gaps, and ensure that newborns identified through screening are connected to timely and comprehensive care.
